“In the winter of 2020-21 i was living with my parents and working as a lift operator at the Diamond Peak ski area from 8am -4pm. I would bring a lunch to have in the ski lift shack instead of going to the lodge and eating at the cafeteria. That way i could devote my whole one-hour lunch break for skiing. My 91-year old mother Cecilia J. Weyland would make a sandwich the night before, and put in a bag with some fruit and maybe a cookie in the refrigerator. Every night she would also write a note to remind me in the morning to not forget my lunch, and would write them consecutively and alternately in English, Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, and Italian, cycling through the languages and then starting over again when she got through the cycle. Along with the writing was often a drawn smiley face, and frequently exclamation marks were utilized. One of the many ironies or humorous aspects of all this was that the intended audience- me- actually only speaks English. The ski season lasted from December to April 18th and almost all the notes were kept, in order, and these are the “poem” texts that appear in this collection.”
